The sun is a major celestial body which the Earth orbits around in its solar system. The book of Genesis in the Bible calls it "the greater light" which God had created in the beginning when He created the heavens and the earth.
In the Left Behind books, the sun is an important element in some of the judgments that God had poured out on mankind during the Tribulation. In the sixth Seal Judgment, the sun turned black as sackcloth while the moon turned red as blood. In the fourth Trumpet Judgment, the sun's light and heat are diminished by a third of its strength, causing temperatures to plummet. In the fourth Bowl Judgment, the sun's heat is increased, scorching to death those who have taken the "mark of loyalty" and worshiped Nicolae Carpathia's image, and also causing the polar ice caps to melt. Near the time of the Glorious Appearing, both the sun and the moon stopped shining in the sky.
